The red lily or dagger cross is the emblem of the Order of Santiago, also known as the Order of Saint James of the Sword. In the Middle Ages, the Knights of St. James played an important role as they protected pilgrims on the Way of St. James. Pilgrim shells, the badges of pilgrims on the Camino, were often painted with the red cross of St. James.
